Everyone is going retinal / retinol CRAZY at the moment aren’t they?! Every time there seems to be a big skincare launch at the moment , it is is more often than not a retinol-type treatment. Everyone is upping their game. Is it just the in thing or do we actually need this in our skincare routine?! Let’s chat all things Retinol / Retinal…
WHAT IS RETINOL?
Retinol is a vitamin A derivative. It sits amongst many other derivatives that you may have heard of such as retinal, Retinaldehyde, Retinoic Acid Esters and Tretinoin.
IS RETINOL SOMETHING YOU SHOULD BE USING?
YES! It is the one ingredient that dermatologists consistently recommend to treat the skin as it’s one of the most effective ingredients you can use on your skin and it treats such a huge range of skin concerns. Retinol will regulate cell turnover, promote effective exfoliation, prevent acne, even skin tone, control oil, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, unclog pores, amongst other things!
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF RETINOL?
We need to talk about retinoids first. Retinol sits underneath this as one of the many forms of retinoids aka Vitamin A derivatives. Am I making sense. I’ll try and keep it simple.
Retinoids are broken down into four main categories: retinyl esters, retinol, retinaldehyde, and retinoic acid. The first three are available as over-the-counter skin care products while retionic acid is only available in prescription form. The strongest form you can get non-prescription is Retinaldehyde (aka RETINAL) which is in this one from Naturium, Medik8 and Skin Rocks to name a few. The more common one is ‘Retinol’ which is in many serums and skincare products such as Paula’s choice, Beauty Pie, L’Oreal, The Ordinary and Clinique.
Retinal is the strongest form you can get which is not prescribed.
Retinol is effective if it’s a the right % and has the right delivery method and accompanying ingredients. Not all retinols are the same!

Naturium Retinaldehyde Cream Serum 0.05%
The Naturium Retinaldehyde Cream Serum is one of the newest launches from Naturium and I have no doubt it’ll be as incredible as all the other bits I have tried from the brand. I haven’t tried this extensively (it’s on my next-to-try-list after I finish my Skin Rocks retinoid 2) so I am not going to show you before and afters or rave about how amazing it has been for my skin but I DO want to tell you all the details and information as I know this will be good ‘un.
The Naturium Retinaldehyde Cream Serum is a a results-driven serum that can be used on most skin types to encourage a smoother, more youthful look. It is powered by sustained-release retinaldehyde. This is a next-generation retinol is a potent ingredient that converts directly to retinoic acid. This will work to visibly reduce the look of fine lines and uneven skin tone and texture, it also helps the skin become smoother and more youthful looking. YES PLEASE.
It has been developed to be at an appropriate pH level to optimise the results and it also contains bio-fermented oligopeptide which will help with skin renewal and repair. This in combination with the 0.05% retinal is a great power duo to tackle multiple skin-ageing concerns.
True-to-it’s-name, it has a cream-serum like feel and texture, it sinks into the skin quickly and leaves a nice bit of glow on the skin. It has a yellow hue but leaves no trace of this. It IS to be used a treated as a serum so apply this after cleansing (in the PM) and then you can finish with a moisturiser if your skin needs it. As with any retinol treatment, if any redness occurs, reduce frequency of use (maybe to x2 /week) until skin adjusts. ALWAYS wear sunscreen during the day when using any form of retinol treatment.

The Naturium Retinaldehyde Cream Serum 0.05% is available from Space NK, priced as a VERY reasonable £32. I honestly was expecting this to be around the £50-£60 mark – and I am always really surprised with the Naturium skincare prices as they feel super luxury, they perform up there with the best of them but the price tags at at the lower end of what I would expect.
Whilst we are here I would also highly recommend these products from Naturium too :
The Naturium Purple Ginseng Cleansing Balm (£21)
The Naturium Niacinimide Cleansing Gelee 3% (£18.50)
The Naturium Phyto-glow lip balm (£12 I have shade Camellia)
The Naturium Glow-Getter multi-oil hydrating body wash (£18)
The Naturium Bio-Lipid Body Lotion (£16.50)
